Sortilegio in English subtitles is a new film by director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea. A Cuban-born filmmaker, Alea is considered one of the most important Latin American filmmakers of the 20th century. The film premiered at Rotterdam Film Festival on January 27, 2014 and made its North American premiere on April 3, 2014 at MoMA in New York City. The movie tells a story about two women who each have a son. One woman has a daughter she has raised alone while the other's family lives in Canada and she sends money to them regularly to support them financially. They meet in Havana and talk about their families' problems when they're not bickering with each other. The other actors were also replaced by the same film crew. The characters of Ana Bustamante and Tono Morales were named after a Cuban author and a renowned journalist from Spain, respectively. In the first scenes of the movie, you see a poster of one of Tomás Gutierrez Alea's famous movies "Memorias del subdesarrollo".
